Thanksgiving 2008: America seems to be giving thanks to change. Change from the old guard to the new guard--no matter what the new guard plans, it's change from a mess. The mess is unfolding daily before our eyes: Retail stores in financial worry, major banks in financial crisis, jobless claims on the rise.. and just in time for Christmas, many companies are scaling back and announcing layoffs. Giving thanks during recession? It can happen. There's more to life than money--though the last 15 years or so wouldn't make you believe that. Thanksgiving today involves food and football, but Puritans believed that the country needed to give thanks. In 1846, Sarah Hale began writing letters to Presidents and publishing essays for a permanent day of thanks.. Hale asked Abraham Lincoln for Thanksgiving.. In 1863, he proclaimed a Thanksgiving holiday on the last Thursday in November, as an attempt to heal the nation after the Civil War. President Roosevelt moved the holiday up a week in 1939 to boost the country's failing economy.. Congress then declared Thanksgiving to be the fourth Thursday in November..

SICK NET: 'OMG AND LOL'

Abraham Biggs, 19, of Pembroke Pines, Florida, killed himself. He was a college student at Broward Community College.. And while the news of a teenager committing suicide may not come as a shock, the fact that he did it online may--on his webcam while people watched.. Glued to their computer screens..

Biggs' name was "CandyJunkie" on a bodybuilding website.. He blogged his plans to kill himself.. Police have been in touch with users of the site that have read his previous blogs, blogs that often spoke about killing himself. According to an AP report today, some users who read the blog told investigators they did not take him seriously because he had threatened suicide on the site before.. However, as the AP goes on to say, the Biggs family is angry that the viewers, or the website, acted to save the 19-year-old's life..

Justin.tv CEO Michael Seibel said: "We regret that this has occurred and want to respect the privacy of the broadcaster and his family during this time."

The AP:

"Condolences poured in to Biggs' MySpace page, where the mostly unsmiling teen is seen posing in a series of pictures with various young women. On justin.tv, his alias was "feels_like_ecstacy.""

Tonight, the investigation continues into the internet suicide. .Cops are beginning to think that Biggs was egged on by fellow bloggers.. Biggs wrote a posting on a body building forum (*one that has since been taken down, according to ABC NEWS:

"I have let everyone down and I feel as though I will never change or never improve. I am in love with a girl and I know that I am not good enough for her. I have come to believe that my life has all been meaningless. I keep trying and I keep failing. I have thought about and attempted suicide many times in the past"

Biggs took a drug overdose in front of his life Net audience.. Viewers reacted with "OMG" and even LOL when they watched his motionless body on the bed while his webcam continued to stream live..

When police tracked down the address of Biggs' home and now death bed, the webcam shut off.. viewers were able to see the cops show up before the transmission was cut..

The disturbing news of Abraham Biggs' death now national and global news.. Another example of the "kids aren't alright" .. and the Internet being used to showcase it..

In this horrid example, though, the net was shown at its worst.. Users with anonymous names sending messages of glee as a young man killed himself in front of them.. People safely in front of their lifeless monitors encouraging madness.. The kids may not be alright, but neither is the Net..

A new study in the Journal of Law and Economics says that the only way to stop obesity amongst our beautiful children is to ban fast food ads..

I love this stuff.. Really.. Precious.

We are heavily inundated with ads about fast food--no pun intended, really--but is it only the ads? Is it only the happy face of Ronald McDonald? Is it only the weird ads for Burger King? Is it only the sports stars eating Big Macs (trademarked, of course)?

Or could it be.. what's in the meat!

This week, we learned that the secret ingredient in fast food meat is corn!.. that's right, little yellow nuggets of questionable impact. That coupled with stories in the past about how corn can make you fat .. It leads me to conclude my age old belief that fast food should be avoided at all costs, until perhaps they tell us what ingredients are in meat and why McDonalds contain as much iron .. as they do. Iron.

The question is this, what should be blamed? The ad? Or what the ad is showcasing as fun and good? Perhaps the sources of food should be questioned and the overall great American escapade of what we think food actually is should be thought about.. After all, this is what is in a McDonalds Chicken Nugget:

Lots of stuff. The ads don't mention that, right..? Maybe if they did we'd finally grow up a little and come to maturely realize the real thing that contributes to obesity: Our overall habits and the fact we mistake trash as food..
